The Williams Family Fund

The Williams Family Fund

After funding a series of workshops, The Williams Family asked The Junior Design Factory if our young designers could create a logo for them. The Junior Designers explored lots of different ideas and decided on a handwritten script that looked like a signature.

The family is passionate about creating lasting change for children and young people, especially those who’ve faced tough times. The green color palette was chosen by the team because it represents trust, sincerity, and security—qualities that reflect the family’s goals and values

“The new logo looks great, the whole family is really happy with what you and the team have created - thank you.”

Connexin Van

Connexin Van

Connexin set the Junior Designers a brief to create print-ready artwork for their specially commissioned vans.

This involved the Junior Design Factory learning how to create vector files for large format print, working to brand guidelines, and liaising closely with the client to ensure their work met the brief.

Here’s Joe and Josh with the finished van wrap!

Colchester Zoo

Colchester Zoo

Our talented young designers where named as winners in the Colchester Zoo STEM Design Challenge and to celebrate their success we arranged a trip to the zoo! It was great for the young designers and families from across the UK to all be together on this two day adventure and to see their design work on display at the Mixed African Paddock area.

It was also brilliant to meet the staff at Colchester Zoo who took time each day to talk to us and answer questions about zoo architecture, enclosure design, and way-finding, which will be going towards everyone's Arts Award portfolios.

This trip was made possible with thanks to sponsorship and support from Leopold Marketing and Ships & Pigs

Here's some of our favourite photos from the two days.

To win the challenge, the young designers showcased their creativity, ingenuity, and STEM skills by designing a visionary ‘Zoo of the Future’, focusing on the redesign of the Mixed African Paddock, to celebrate the Zoo’s 60th Anniversary.

The Junior Design Factory stood out among the numerous exceptional entries with their innovative ideas and detailed designs. They produced sketches, learnt how to work to scale, used AI design software, made models, and even spoke to the Zoo Keepers to gain feedback on their initial design ideas.

Here’s a very small selection of the dozens of page of sketches and plans which our young design team produced for this challenge!

MKM Family Stand

MKM Family Stand

Young designers at The Junior Design Factory took on the exciting challenge of reinventing the ‘Family Stand’ at MKM Stadium, home of Hull City Football Club.

To inform their designs, they conducted primary research at two match day events. The team created distinct ‘Zones’ within the space, each offering a unique and engaging experience, such as ‘The Selfie Zone’ and the ‘Tigers Tuck Shop’, and came up with graphic concepts to rebrand the full area.

“The site visit was amazing! We got to go to the stadium when nobody else was there. I saw the full pitch”

Hull Is This

Hull Is This

Hull Is This is a constructive journalism platform which promotes positive news stories in Hull. The editor asked The Junior Design Factory to design a modern, forward-thinking logo – not using old technology as icons, so no rolled-up newspapers, megaphones, typewriters – and certainly nothing to do with the Humber Bridge either!

The Junior Designers designed the logo around the concept of communication. They ‘hit’ upon the idea of using Morse Code for the letters H.I.T.

H = dot dot dot dot, I = dot dot, T = dash.

This gives a clever nod to history, whilst creating an eye catching and contemporary brand for news worth shouting about!

Puffins Galore!

Puffins Galore!

‘Don’t be a Dodo’ is a sculpture designed by The Junior Design Factory, and sponsored by City Health Care Partnership, as part of Puffins Galore!

The Puffins Galore! sculpture trail, which ran from Bempton to Spurn Point from 2022 to 2023, concluded with a grand charity auction.

The Puffin designed by The Junior Factory was led by our Ambassador, Josh, who drew inspiration from the natural lifespans of animals and geological time periods. The Junior Design Factory depicted these geological eras through different coloured stripes on the bird's chest, with a gold stripe on the head symbolising the present period.

The Puffin has found at its forever home at Withernsea Lighthouse! (Picture credit: @CHCP & @WithernseaLighthouse)

The Ship That Got Stuck

The Ship That Got Stuck!

The Ship That Got Stuck is a book that The Junior Design Factory helped to write and illustrate, with a graphic designer called Meg! The book is based on the true story of the Ever Given Boat that got stuck in the Suez Canal in 2021.

The book shows everyone’s ideas of how they would get the boat unstuck using different animals!

A fun project, which involved the children learning about illustration for books, character design, working with vector files, selecting fonts which work for print, and meeting deadlines,

Design Tasks for Kids!

Design Tasks for Kids

Design Tasks for Kids was a website of creative activities, designed by The Junior Design Factory for other kids! The website was commissioned by Dinostar, Hull’s Dinosaur Museum as a way of keeping dinosaur fans engaged during the Covid-19 national lockdowns.

The website went offline in 2024, but we have included many of these activities here so the legacy of Design Tasks For Kids can live on!

“The Junior Design Factory team used their boundless imagination to develop the Design Tasks website, which perfectly complements our dinosaur museum and our dinosaur workshops in schools”

Steve Plater, Dinostar - The Dinosaur Experience
